I want to do the right ones, and those scripts don’t come up very often. I want to honor the genre, instead of signing on to do it because that’s what people think I should be doing. They’re the movies that people watch over and over and over again when they’re good-they become classics.

I find that people think they know how to make them, but they’re actually really hard to make. That to me was more of, I only want to produce the rom-coms and do the ones that I really know I can have my hands on, at this point in my career.
It came to a point where instead of doing those, I just stopped working as much. So I think that’s what I’m talking about. The opportunities that were given? Frankly, I’m grateful to people who like me in a rom-com, but I didn’t start in this business to play one thing. I like to disappear into bold characters, and I wasn’t being given those opportunities.
When that started to happen for me, it made me sad. That’s unfair to women because there’s a lot of women I know that are big stars, who have the same kinds of situations that I do-working with certain great directors, people that you really want to work with-but there’s not enough room on the screen for the female star. I just want to make sure that I’m doing all of it for me, for the director, and for the sake of a good story-I’m putting my best foot forward. I don’t care what’s going on on the outside. In terms of fear, being driven by fear, that’s never really been the way I move through life. I’ve had people write kind things, and people write very cruel things. I’ve been at this for two decades, I’ve had moments that have felt so elevated, and I have moments that have felt very low. I’ve seen people go from success to plateaus, to dips, to valleys. Because of how I grew up, I know how the business works, and I know that people build you up to tear you down. I don’t put that kind of pressure on myself. That was all there.ĭid you feel even more pressure to deliver than usual, because you’ve been waiting for something like this? When I read it, it was the hats, the bathing suit, the outfit, walking out with the outfit. And that part to me is the most important. Where does that come from? For any character that could be quite unlikable it’s those things that ground it that make you have a little bit more empathy for this terrible person who is just oblivious to the way she walks, moves through life. That for me was the fun part-this deep need to seek validation, to need to be loved, be seen, to be at the center of everyone’s love. Characters that are larger than life on the page don’t work as well if they’re not grounded or rooted in some purpose for their behavior. The challenge for Birdie was how to ground her. That poolside outfit tells more story about her than any bit of dialogue could.
